The mission of the BCSD Green Team is to help staff, students, and our communities look at the choices we make each day and see how those choices affect our planet and environment. Earth Day presents a great opportunity to do this!
Much of the “garbage that we create” at schools happen in our cafeterias. In order to focus our attention on cafeteria waste, the Green Team will be sponsoring the “Litterless Lunch Challenge”. Staff and students will be encouraged to eat lunch without creating garbage! This would be accomplished by bring in a lunch that may contain the following items:
- Reusable lunch bag/box
- Reusable food containers
- Reusable cloth napkin
- Reusable drink container
- Reusable flatware
During each schools designated week students that bring in a lunch with no garbage will get a Green Team ticket that confirms that they had a “Litterless Lunch”. Students fill out the ticket with their name and lunch period which is then entered into a prize drawing at the end of the week. Prizes will be $ 2.50 gift certificates for the Delmar Farmers Market!
Please note: although recycling has tremendous environmental benefits and is encouraged across the district, the “Litterless Lunch Challenge” does not include recyclable items. For this Earth Day event, only reusable items are considered a “Litterless Lunch.” Also, to ensure that students that buy lunch can participate, any student that brings in a re-usable cloth napkin will be eligible to receive a Green Team ticket.
The Bethlehem Central School District Green Team encourages all staff and students to help our planet this Earth Week and bring in a litterless lunch!
