Important change to Oct. 8 “Go Home Early” drill

There will be no early dismissal on Thursday, Oct. 8 as this year’s “Go Home Early” drill is conducted a little differently. School buses on that day will follow their regular afternoon drop-off routes.

The annual drill, which is used by the district to test transportation and communication protocols, typically includes a 15-minute early dismissal and requires students who don’t normally take a school bus home to use district transportation as part of a practice early release drill. For the 2020-21 school year, students and families will instead review their school bus information on October 8, either at school or online with their teachers.

A “Go Home Early” dismissal may be used in a situation where it is necessary to transport students home prior to regular dismissal times. The district has a plan that includes additional buses that can be used to send all students home early in the event of emergencies, such as a storm or power outage, that interrupts normal dismissal.

In the event of an unannounced “Go Home Early” event, parents and guardians would be contacted using the school district’s School Messenger system.

“We want families to know we are prepared for an unexpected dismissal,” said Superintendent Monroe. “This year, we are adjusting our drill with COVID precautions in mind. On October 8, each school will review its individual plan with students so children have an understanding of where they need to go and what they need to do in the event of an early dismissal from school.”
