On September 28, 2020, the BCSD Operations and Maintenance staff collected water samples at all school buildings in the district, including the middle school. These were collected as part of regularly scheduled testing for lead levels in water potentially used for drinking or cooking. The testing is required by New York State for all public schools and was last conducted in the district in 2016, when the water testing law first took effect.

In accordance with the law, samples from 32 water outlets at the middle school were tested. These samples included water fountains that have been taken out of service due to COVID safety precautions. All samples were sent to a state-approved laboratory to test lead levels. District officials received the water test results from this laboratory on October 7, 2020.

None of the sources tested at Bethlehem Central Middle School showed elevated lead levels exceeding the “action level” of 15 parts per billion (ppb).

A fact sheet explaining the testing requirements for New York public schools can be viewed here.

At all times, the district will ensure that all students and staff have an adequate supply of water for drinking and cooking.

All of the information above, as well water results from other schools in the district, will be  posted to the district website as they are received. If you have questions regarding 2020 water testing at BC, please contact Director of Facilities and Operations Gregg Nolte at gnolte@bethlehemschools.org.
