BC celebrated National School Breakfast Week from Monday, March 5 through Friday, March 9 to focus on the importance of proper nutrition each morning to jump start a student’s learning process. While the week of celebration may be over, the emphasis on a healthy breakfast is still there.
Busy weekday mornings make it a challenge for many families to find time for a healthy breakfast. However, US Department of Agriculture data show that more and more students are starting their day with a nutritious breakfast in their school cafeterias. Studies show that students who eat school breakfast are more likely to:
- Reach higher levels of achievement in reading and math
- Score higher on standardized tests
- Have better concentration, memory and alertness
- Have improved attendance, behavior, and academic performance
- Maintain a healthy weight
“We take great pride in serving the students a quality, nutritious breakfast with a smile each and every morning,” said Bethlehem Food Services Director and Registered Dietitian Allissa Eiser. “Ensuring students are prepared for the school day ahead because of a well-balanced breakfast is part of the BCSD Food Service Department’s mission.”
